Taxonomy

Phylum: Arthropoda von Siebold, 1848

Class: Malacostraca Latreille, 1802

Order: Hymenocarina Clarke, 1882

Family: Protocarididae Miller, 1889

Genus: Branchiocaris Resser, 1929

Species: Branchiocaris? yunnanensis Hou, 1987

Description: Branchiocaris? yunnanensis is known from large bivalved carapace. The valves are sub-circular in outline with maximum height in the mid-length of valve. The dorsal margin is straight, with antero- and posterodorsal processes. The dorsal spines are strongly short, subequal in length and not beyond the anterior and posterior margin. The dorsomedian of the valve is convex. The valve L:H ratio from 1.05 to 1.65; the ventral margin process narrow doublure; densely reticulated ornaments outside, honeycombed structure with 3-D aspect of the wall. Convexity of valve may show intraspecific variation. Morph A has the moderate convexity; morph B with a subdorsal swelling, extended above hinge line.
